Access all areas: Dismantling the barriers to cinema

Workshop held in English
Melanie Iredale (Reclaim the Frame)

hr 13-16

With film having the potential to be one of our most accessible forms of art and entertainment, and cinemas performing well under capacity, how can we reach bigger and broader audiences and reduce barriers to entry along the way? In this participatory session, we will together explore access measures, materials and marketing methods for audiences with different access and communication needs, and including groups less likely to see films in the cinema. Drawing on case studies from inclusion specialists Reclaim The Frame, a charity dedicated to building community for marginalised perspectives in film, and whose recently supported titles have included SMOKE SAUNA SISTERHOOD, SANTOSH, and the upcoming HAMNET. Through collectively sharing what’s worked, and the challenges distributors’ face in this area, this session will offer tools, checklists and examples of best practice in accessible provision, and in promotion and outreach, engaging the widest possible audience, including those currently under-served, and under-attending.
