How to watch a film that hasn't been made yet? Foresight (for) accessible cinema of the future

Workshop held in Polish

Bartosz Frąckowiak (Strategic Dreamers)

hr 11-17

What will cinema look like when every viewer experiences a different version of the same film – adapted to their perceptual needs? Will anyone come to a dark room to watch a film with strangers in 20 years? And if so, will it be the same room we know today?

This workshop is a journey into the future of cinema that does not exist yet, but whose signals are already emerging. Using the Manoa Scenario Building method, participants will examine emerging issues from various domains – from neurointerfaces changing the perception of image and sound, through AI generating real-time accessibility, to new economies of film experiences and shifts in what "watching a film" and audiovisual experience actually means. From these phenomena, through cascades of implications (Futures Wheels) and their mutual collisions and cross-impacts, participants will construct alternative scenarios for the future in 20-30 years – worlds full of internal tensions and unexpected opportunities. This will not be a discussion about what cinema "should" be. The workshop is conceived as a laboratory of imagination, where we explore and try to understand what may emerge from the chaos of changes.

Participants will design specific artifacts from these futures – entry tickets, theatre regulations, accessibility device interfaces, agreements between viewers and platforms – and take them away not as forecasts, but as tools for thinking about the choices we are already making now. We will consider what change factors – trends, weak signals, disruptions – can support cinematography where accessibility is not an add-on to "normality," but the foundation for new ways of shared experience and the creation of moving images. Images that we do not yet know, but whose conditions for creation and reception we can co-design.

Graphic. On a grey background, right in the centre, there is a photograph showing a woman who uses a camera to record a meeting. She is wearing huge earphones on her head and keeps looking at the camera’s display screen. Above the photograph is the logo of Forum Without Barriers and a caption which reads: Workshops. Below is the title of the event: How to Watch a Film that Hasn't Been Made Yet? Foresight (for) Accessible Cinema of the Future.
