What is perception?

“I understand the whole, but I’d have a problem explaining it” MAGDA

“To think about something” RAFAŁ

“To perceive the world” NATALIA

“The eye” KUBA

“Everyone perceives differently” PATRYK

In their search for more answers, the artists were helped by the stories of Etgar Keret’s. In one of them, the protagonist learns during an assessment that he “suffers from a major perception disorder”.

PERCEPTION is the fourth premiere by JEST JAK JEST THEATRE, and represents a logical consequence of their previous work. In the first performance in 2019, the actors and actresses sang “I AM” in a barely audible voice. In the second, they responded to the message from the people close to them: “I am afraid of your ever bigger shoes, I am afraid of you growing up.”

Further creative process was influenced by the death of a member of the ensemble and the arrival of a new actor. The structure of the group changed. Existential questions came to the fore, and answers had to be found. We saw and heard as they attempted to formulate them in I’m Running, which also caused the dynamics of their work to change. It stirred the senses, enabling realization of what it means to see, hear, feel, taste, touch, to be seen, heard, and embraced.

In PERCEPTION, the actors discover and express their unique view of reality. They show how differently they see the world, share the wealth and complexity of their emotions. Non-Normativity becomes the Norm—in the theatrical reality, the actors and actresses forge the Norm, and the inner world of their experience translate into scenes.

Join us for a performance during which we will together fill the space where every voice is heard and every perception is appreciated.

In terms of experience and achievement, Jest Jak Jest are the most junior among the dramatic groups at Zamek, having been founded in 2019. The ensemble consists of persons with disabilities from various backgrounds. To date, Jest Jak Jest have developed and staged three performances at CK Zamek: I Am, I’m Afraid of Your Ever Bigger Shoes  and I’m Running (see reviews at: https://www.teatralny.pl/artykuly/doroslosc-nienasycona-3778 and https://e-teatr.pl/lsnilo-mi-sie-niebo-26341)

The artistic supervisor and director of the group’s performances is Grażyna Wydrowska, actress, director, theatre pedagogue and co-founder of the legendary Wierzbak Theatre. Wydrowska conducts workshops and training courses as well as creates intergenerational artistic and social projects. Her achievement has been recognized with numerous awards and distinctions. In her work, she engages with both professional artists and amateurs: children, adults and seniors.

The visuals used in the performance were created by Joanna Pawlik, a performer and visual artist. Pawlik holds a PhD in Fine Arts from the Pedagogical University of Kraków. Her work draws on her own intimate experience of disability and then broadens the scope of the subject by incorporating the work of other artists, including amateurs, into her presentation.
