Conversations About PRESENCE in Theatre

Conversations About PRESENCE in Theatre is a compelling statement in the debate on equal access to stage for artists with different bodies, different abilities, and different needs.

edited by Justyna Czarnota, Katarzyna Piwońska

published by ZAMEK Culture Centre in Poznań

The volume delivers a multifaceted story about theatre and dance created by artists with disabilities. First and foremost, it gives voice to the artists themselves, who talk about their career trajectories, their mission, their working methods, the difficulties they face in the fossilized world of theatre, where the ubiquitous “norm” dictates the rules of the game. They also talk about the challenges that need to be overcome so that public stages become accessible to artists with disabilities.

At the same time, the book introduces other perspectives, as insights are shared by those involved in production, theatre critics, technical support professionals, programming managers as well as people behind institutions that defy barriers and stereotypes.

Moreover, Conversations About PRESENCE in Theatre suggests a range of solutions and good practices, thanks to which the performing arts may become less hermetic and more egalitarian.

This volume was published as part of the Presence project, carried out in 2022-2023 by ZAMEK Culture Centre in Poznań in cooperation with CODA Oslo International Dance Festival (Norway) and the Centre for Inclusive Arts / Theatre 21 (Warsaw, Poland),  thanks to funding from the EEA and Norway Grants.

Just as the people whose voices have been collected in this volume, we believe that the diversity of bodies represented on stage effectively reflects the existing social structures. We also see that opening up to that diversity enables us to reach into and reveal broader sensitivity within ourselves and those around us. We hope that after reading, you too will discover a part of your own sensitivity of which you may have been unaware, but which has always been there nevertheless
