Does Franz Kafka's oeuvre have to connote darkness and absurdity? Was there another facet to the author of The Trial that we do not yet know? As it turns out, numerous literary pieces that the writer did not finish provide an interesting counterpoint to the widespread interpretation of his best-known works and biography. The creators of Latent are searching for a different Kafka, an equivocally tragic figure. Excerpts from texts abandoned by the author, sometimes interrupted mid-sentence, are delivered on stage by the actors of the Teatr pod Fontanną by way of analogy to a kaleidoscope, in which small, sometimes even broken elements, shimmer and twinkle, making up an intriguing whole. Latent seeks to find a smile in the tale of the daily struggles of one writer, several actors, or perhaps all of us? The performance is an opportunity to look at Kafka’s prose and reinterpret it through juxtaposition with the author’s obscure and unobvious life story.
Latent is based on Franz Kafka's Prozy utajone [Latent Proses] (PIW, 2019), a volume of unfinished, compelling and yet disturbing pieces of prose, selected and translated by Łukasz Musiał, who also contributed to the show as a consultant. Guest actors from Teatr Ósmego Dnia will appear on stage as well, engaging in yet another colloquy with Kafka’s work, following the experience of working on Kafka: [the text breaks off]. The latter performance premiered on 16 and 17 December 2022 at the Teatr Ósmego Dnia in Poznań.
