THE SIGHTS THERE ARE / exhibition / Jarosław Klupś

This work uses slides made by an anonymous author, probably a Cracow engineer who during his numerous international travels in the 1970s and 1980s visited and photographed various historical sites, cities and nature. The collection shows popular locations in a surprising setting—without the crowds of tourists—captured in Europe, Asia, Middle East, Africa and America.  This set of over 2,000 carefully developed slides occasionally reveals the author of the narrative of the past: an explorer and an amateur photographer who passionately documented the sights of remote countries and cultures. The original transparencies cover a window at the castle, creating a singular stained-glass feature, which reminds us of the potent effect of photography in its material form, its former aesthetics and function.
