The goading beats of the drum chase and drive the dancers across the confined space of a room. Thanks to some collective sense, the couples glide past one another, with only pieces of the trailing shirts and blouses brushing against each other. The room is filled to the brim with stifling air and the hoarse sound of the bass, pierced here and there by the rhythmically perplexing rubato phrase of the fiddle.
The dance madness of the Opoczno region is a mainstay of the musical fascinations shared by the members of Odpoczno. For the past five years, they have been prospecting for and sifting musical traditions to find the most captivating oberek dances, only to dress their essence into a more contemporary garb. The Łódź-based quartet take advantage of an opulent range of solutions: from energetic pugnacity of jazz-rock to electronic transformations.
The rhythmical layer of their interpretations is grittily dense thanks to the syncopated, jazzy drums, while the melody is a concoction of the psychedelic guitar dialoguing with the folkish song of the fiddle. The singing remains austere, rural, steeped in the tradition of Mazovia. All this together makes the music of Odpoczno a bold, sometimes avant-garde rendering of local music, which nonetheless pays it its due homage.
