SKOWRONKI FOR THE SHROVETIDE \ a carnival concert

The pre-Lent period, which used to be known in Poland as “zapusty” or “mięsopusty”, is a time of winter entertainments, masquerades, processions and balls. The word carnival as such derives from Italian carnevale (“farewell to meat”) as well as other words which denoted roughly the same. All, however, spoke of a break from meat-eating in preparation for the Lent and the later Easter. Skowronki for the Shrovetide will tie in with carnival moods with choral arrangements of dance and dance-inspired music.
