To introduce her October lecture, Jana
Pilátová writes thus: “Ever since I was a child, I used to hear that you learn
from your mistakes. Still, this is no easy thing. Success tends to be naturally
attributed to our skill, whereas accident or another’s fault are blamed for
failure. Thus we waste the opportunity to learn from the mistakes. (…)
Theatre may function as a laboratory where mistakes are investigated, both for
us personally and for the community. Things hidden under the surface become
accessible when things do not work the way they should. It is thanks to
dysfunction that neurologists discover the secrets of the brain; thanks to
social crises that are theatrically modelled, one can unravel the secrets of
society and culture. A theatre addicted to success renounces the blessings of error
analysis and deprives itself of the other shore, the shore of reality.”
Jana Pilátová is a theatre expert, professor at the Faculty of Theatre, Academy of Performing Arts in Prague (DAMU), translator and dramatist.
