Forecourt of the Castle: A place for all \ About the Contest

The courtyard adjoining St Martin street is a place which links the Castle with the cityscape. Aiming to exploit its tremendous potential, we embark on a comprehensive change. We plan to transform the paved area serving as a car park into a green courtyard, a venue of encounter and inspiration, as well as an element of actual revitalization of Poznań’s city centre.  In order to ensure superior quality of solutions we launch an architectural competition.

Initially, this was a ceremonial courtyard, separated from the street by a high fence and greenery, which underscored private character of the residence. In later years, it was made accessible to the public, becoming a favourite scenery for souvenir photographs. In the course of the 1940s conversion the fence was removed, which opened the place onto the street. After World War II, the courtyard became a car park, and has retained that function until the present day. It is only several days in a year that it changes into a festival space and a venue of large open-air events.

Today, we are thinking to relocate events which draw mass audience and require substantial space to the Adam Mickiewicz square or onto the street. As for the courtyard, our intention is for it to become a cosy, green space, adapted to persons with various needs. It should be a place of respite and a place of meeting throughout the week, not just on special days. Apart from daily leisure, it will be a venue for our educational and animation activities, as well as minor events involving music or theatre. A well-designed space, shaped with due regard for the historical context and understanding of modern needs is certain to fulfil those goals.  What we have in mind is a space enabling flexible use of the courtyard, supplied with lasting greenery, mobile urban furniture, sources of water and shade. We hope that this common courtyard will become an important spot on the city’s map for all its inhabitants.
